Already know where you’ll be spending your next holidays? We understand that now is not the time to be splurging, what with fuel prices rising as they are. However, we can still find some great getaway options without spending too much. We spoke to a few travel agencies to get their advice on how to save money when planning a trip to Galicia. Siente Galicia, Simply Galicia and Galicia Auténtica tell us their top low-cost destinations.

Atlantic Islands: camping in the Rías Baixas

Pita

Fancy a getaway to the Rías Baixas without breaking the bank? The travel agencies we talked to typically recommend avoiding this destination if you are looking something low-cost, though there are ways to cut costs, such as your choice of accommodation. Fortunately, both campsites and regular boats to the Atlantic Islands National Park operate during Easter and summer. However, places are limited and you will also need to request authorisation from the Xunta de Galicia (regional government). Once that’s done, all that’s left to do is to set sail for paradise and choose your destination. Cíes or Ons archipelago?

Mariña Lucense: coastal holidays for all budgets

Coastal destinations are generally more expensive than inland destinations, the travel agencies warn. However, with over 1,300 kilometres of coastline, there are options for all budgets. A prime example would be the Mariña Lucense, claims Simply Galicia. From O Vicedo to Ribadeo you can find beaches such as As Catedrais, stunning cliffs such as Fuciño do Porco, fishing villages such as Rinlo, and much more besides. A perfect combo for a seaside holiday on a budget.

Mountains around Lugo: rural and adventure tourism

Avoiding big city hotels is another top tip from the travel agencies when it comes to finding bargains. In fact, one of the best ways to avoid a nasty hotel bill is to opt for rural tourism. Simply Galicia explains that some of the cheapest accommodation in the region can be found inland within the province of Lugo, especially in the mountains. An ideal location for lovers of active tourism and adventure holidays and those looking to connect with nature.

Ribeira Sacra: among catamarans and wineries

Ribeira Sacra is currently one of the most fashionable locations, combining rural tourism, stunning landscapes, nature and wine. What more could you ask for? The travel agencies all agree that Ribeira Sacra, being an inland destination, is certainly one of the most affordable options. Galicia Auténtica gives an example: a four-day getaway to a spa for two people would cost less than 400 euros. There are also a large number of catamaran operators offering trips along the rivers Miño and Sil during the holiday season. And to recharge your batteries following your excursions, why not visit a wine cellar!

Costa da Morte: a route along the coastline

For those who can’t do without the sea, probably the most economical option would be the Costa da Morte, claims Siente Galicia. While you will certainly need a car to get around the area and take in its cliffs, beaches and villages, this expense is offset by affordable accommodation. There are also companies that offer excursions along the Ruta dos Faros, an option that only requires a pair of comfortable shoes and a fully charged mobile phone to take loads of photos while you’re out and about.

Allariz: beauty with fashion outlet included

Allariz is part of the network of The Most Beautiful Villages of Spain. The destination offers several spas where you can relax and Galicia Auténtica claims that is a perfect choice for the whole family. Aside from its fairy-tale setting and charming old town, there is a local offer that allows you to visit all of its museums for a single entrance fee, and there is something for everyone. The toy museum, for example, is a brilliant choice for the little ones. What's more, you can use the money you save to freshen up your wardrobe, as there is also a fashion outlet nearby.

Mariñas coruñesas: sustainable and accessible sailing

Galicia Auténtica recommends a hidden gem that has great future potential, at least when it comes to saving our planet. Here you can find an electric catamaran accessible to people with reduced mobility that crosses the Ares-Betanzos estuary. The agency adds that three nights' accommodation for two people in a hotel in Sada would cost just over 200 euros. What you save, you can then spend in travelling around the Mariñas area of A Coruña.

Why settle for a single destination? Following the yellow arrows is a great option for those who want to stay on the move and discover the rich heritage and landscape of numerous locations throughout Galicia… and without having to spend their money on fuel! There are ten official routes that run through areas as varied as the Rías Baixas, the Valdeorras region and the Cantabrian coastline. There is no single route or set way of getting to Santiago de Compostela. Sleeping in public hostels, for example, is a great low-cost alternative for touring Galicia.
