In the fierce competition for the best bench in the world, A Estrada makes a grand entrance with a rotating seat that is a lucky charm in itself and also allows you to enjoy Monte da Serra from every angle

Monte da Serra, in the parish of Liripio (A Estrada), is crowned by an impressive viewpoint. From there, you can hear the silence and take in an endless range of greens that is quite remarkable. Due to its remote location, the spectacle was, until recently, reserved for intrepid locals or lost hikers. But that changed at the end of 2024, when A Estrada native Vicente Pereiras had the idea to put the Mirador do Outeiro Grande on the map. Pereiras, who is deeply passionate about the equine world, is a member of the Rapa das Bestas collective in Sabucedo and an organizer of equestrian pilgrimages to Compostela to promote the Camiño da Geira e dos Arrieiros and the Camiño de Ignacio Taverneiro.

Perhaps because of this, the bench with a view that he designed for the Outeiro Grande viewpoint was not made of wood, but of horseshoes. The structure is built entirely of old horseshoes welded together and shaped to provide a comfortable seat. A total of 110 pieces were used, coming from horses that made the pilgrimage to Santiago and, upon their return, needed their "soles" replaced.

Taking into account that the horseshoe is considered a universal lucky charm, the bench in A Estrada will surely be the most coveted seat for walkers in search of good luck.

With or without fortune, climbing up to the viewpoint always has its reward. Situated at an altitude of 776 meters, it offers views of the mountains of Forcarei, Cerdedo-Cotobade, Moraña, and Campo Lameiro. You can also see the mythical Pico Sacro and part of the Deza region. On clear days, you can even see the sea, with the Ría de Arousa and Monte Xiabre clearly visible.

To reach the viewpoint, simply follow the Google Maps directions for Mirador de Outeiro Grande in Cabanelas (Liripio). The most direct way to reach it is from the A Estrada-Forcarei road (EP-7001). At a junction to the left before reaching the Forcarei astronomical observatory, a sign with a drawing of a horseshoe marks the turn-off. Shortly after, you must leave the car and continue on foot for a few meters, where you will spot the horseshoe bench and the Galician flag accompanying it at the summit. The climb is well worth the effort.

The excursion can be combined with a pre-arranged visit to the astronomical observatory (observatorioforcarei.es), a walk by the Vesacarballa mills in the parish of Sabucedo (A Estrada), or an exploration of the Neveiras de Fixó in the municipality of Forcarei—colossal snow storage pits that bear witness to the Galician ice industry in the Middle Ages. If you feel like hiking, you can also take the opportunity to tackle the Codeseda-Sabucedo Challenge (PR-G 197).
