Sledging and skiing in Manzaneda
A winning plan for the winter months. Galicia may not be a typical destination for snow enthusiasts, but the mountains of Ourense are crowned with a blanket of white at this time of year. There, on the highest peak of the Queixa mountain range, is Cabeza de Manzaneda, Galicia’s only ski resort. Aside from equipment rental, which includes snowboarding, sledges and snowshoes, you can find courses for all levels and ages. And if it doesn’t snow, you can always choose between a wide range of adventure activities on offer.
Visiting a castle in Vimianzo
The little ones can feel like knights, kings or queens for a day if they visit one of the many castles to be found in Galicia. One of the best preserved castles is Castelo de Vimianzo. The fortress, which was built between the 12th and 13th centuries, allows you to travel back to the Middle Ages and imagine what life must have been like for those who lived there through its towers, courtyard and moat. It also houses a live craftsmanship museum where you can see people plying their trade.
A day of snow in Os Ancares
Building a snowman or taking part in a snowball fight are what many children dream about at this time of year. While it’s too early to know for sure where it will snow this winter, there are some areas that will almost certainly be blanketed in white. A prime example would be the Os Ancares mountains, where picture-postcard landscapes combine with a truly magnificent natural environment. A great choice for a weekend getaway or a fun day out.
